Chapter 8

Feeling as if a huge weight had been lifted from her shoulders, Abby was finally able to enjoy the meal. The mood lightened, and for the first time in a long time, she was able to completely dismiss Martin from her thoughts. Figuring Logan didn’t want to talk about work any more than she wanted to continue the discussion about her boss, she asked him about his family, and soon they were talking about their childhoods, family traditions, outrageous moments in their past that their siblings wouldn’t let die.

“I wanted to be a ballerina when I was a little girl,” she confided, her eyes shining with the memory. “I even had a ballerina doll that could stand on her toes and bend her knees. She had a tutu and I wanted one, too.”

Logan grinned. “Why do I have a suspicion this is one of those stories that will still embarrass you when you’re a hundred and three?”

She laughed. “Well, I don’t know if I’ll make it to a hundred and three or not, but yeah, it’s one of those moments siblings love to needle you about. Of course, my mother made sure no one ever forgot it. She caught it on tape.”

“Oh, God,” he groaned. “Movie cameras—don’t you hate them? What did you do?”

“I pretended my slip was a tutu and danced in the backyard in nothing but it and my panties. And I never knew until it was too late that my entire family was standing at the kitchen windows, watching. I blushed so badly that my hair turned red and it’s been that way ever since.”

Delighted, he laughed. “Yeah, right! And how old were you when you had this recital?”

“I believe I was four.”

“I bet you were cute as a button.”

“All four-year-olds are cute as a button.”

His eyes warmed as they locked with hers. “You’re still cute as a button, Miss Saunders…especially when you blush. Watch it—your hair’s getting redder even as we speak.”

Her lips twitched. “I can see right now that I never should have told you that story,” she said dryly. “So what’s your most embarrassing moment? It’s only fair that you give me the same kind of ammunition I gave you.”

Sitting back in his chair, he rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “Let’s see. There are so many. Carter had a real knack for setting me up when we were kids. He would sneak into my room at night and scare the beejeebees out of me. One night, he convinced me that someone had broken into the house. Our father was away on a business trip, and I didn’t know he was coming home early. I heard someone on the stairs, grabbed a giant-size bottle of shampoo from the bathroom and dumped it all over Dad.”

“Oh, no!”

“Oh, no is right,” he chuckled. “Carter and I were both out of college and married before we got off restriction.”

She laughed, loving the way his eyes danced. “Poor baby,” she teased. “At least there was no home movie of you.
